Cider production

My press and mill were built in the 1950's or 60's by Beare of Newton Abbot.

These presses were very common throughout Somerset and all the cider making counties in their heyday, but there are not that many about nowadays.

I found mine in a bramble patch near Wincanton where it had lain for maybe 20 years.  It took a fair amount of effort to get it back in working condition.

Unusually mine runs on its original water pump, which means it needs a bit of nursing to keep it running to its full pressure (100 tons), but I would not have it any other way - it owes more to steam technology than modern and the gentle ticking and whirring is far nicer than the drone of a hydraulic pump.
